What’s New in the Mexico Visa Process: Electronic and Practical Changes

Updated on 5/7/2024: According to local media, the Mexican government will not resume the electronic visa for Brazilians in May. A new date has not been announced.

Good news for those planning to travel to Mexico!

Starting this month, May, the process of obtaining a Mexican visa will be simplified with the introduction of the electronic format. This change was confirmed by the governor of the State of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, and by the tourism entrepreneur and honorary consul of Brazil in Cancun, Lilian Zanon. According to them, the new visa will cost US$10 and will be extremely practical.

This transition to the electronic format comes after months of conversations between Mexican authorities and representatives of the tourism sector, highlighting the importance of the national outbound market for Mexican destinations. Mara Lezama emphasized that this decision will facilitate the arrival of more Brazilian tourists to the country, especially to the State of Quintana Roo, home to famous destinations such as Cancun.

The news comes at a crucial time, as the Mexican tourism sector has felt the impact of the suspension of the electronic visa for Brazilian tourists, resulting in significant losses estimated at around US$400 million, according to Jesus Almaguer, president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres hotels.

It is worth noting that, although the Mexican government has previously promised to transition to the electronic format, this appears to be a permanent change, scheduled to begin on May 9. Previously, the visa for Mexico was physical, but now the convenience of the electronic format promises to speed up and simplify the process for Brazilian travelers.

To apply for the Mexican visa, the Mexican Consulate in São Paulo has adopted a new form format, which can be downloaded directly from its official website. The form can be filled out manually or by computer and must be accompanied by the applicant’s photograph, according to the instructions provided.

These changes represent a significant advance for Brazilian travelers who wish to explore the charms of Mexico. With the new e-visa, the process of planning corporate travel to this destination will become even simpler and more convenient.
